A basement fire in a single-family home in Unterpleichfeld, Lower Franconia, has left two residents injured. An 87-year-old woman and her 85-year-old husband managed to escape the house but were taken to hospitals with injuries including smoke inhalation, police said. The woman has since been discharged, while the man remains in hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

The fire broke out at around 7:15 AM. The cause is still unknown, according to investigators. The fire department extinguished the blaze after about an hour. The house is currently uninhabitable. The damage is estimated in the hundreds of thousands.

The Criminal Police in Würzburg have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Despite their ordeal, the married couple remains hopeful for a full recovery. Their resilience in the face of adversity is commendable.
