Animal welfare - Marketer removes chicken from range after accusations
Following allegations of animal cruelty, the poultry distributor Astenhof will no longer sell chickens from the fattening facility in question for the time being. The company, which is based in Hainspitz (Saale-Holzland district), announced that the farm had been removed from the supply chain until the allegations had been finally clarified. "We do not tolerate animal welfare violations."
Animal rights activists had previously made serious allegations against the company, including the illegal emergency slaughter of sick animals. The public prosecutor's office and police are investigating on suspicion of violating the Animal Welfare Act.
Astenhof explained that legal action will be taken against a person who can be seen in the animal rights activists' videos "apparently carrying out emergency slaughtering in violation of animal welfare law". In addition, the company in question will file criminal charges if the animal rights activists' footage documents behavior that violates animal welfare.
The "Animal Welfare Initiative", whose seal of approval the meat marketed by Astenhof bears, also responded to the accusations. "No control system can fully prevent such behavior - unless permanent monitoring of people on farms at all times of the day and night is implemented," it said in a statement.
