People - Marianne and Michael: Golden years without the stress of deadlines

Marianne Hartl from the folk music duo Marianne and Michael is already looking forward to the time after her departure from the stage in spring. "We no longer want to sacrifice our golden years for our career," the 70-year-old told the Bild newspaper on Tuesday. "We want to live! I'll be 71, Michael 75. Many friends and colleagues are dying around us. Many are retiring far too late. That makes us think." But there is life after the show: "For us, this is the start of the best decade. Free from patterns and busy schedules."

The successful couple from a Munich suburb will start their farewell tour on February 15, 2024 in Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The finale after around 50 years on stage together is planned for April 28 in Suhl, Thuringia. The pair announced the end of their careers almost a year ago. "It's time for the youngsters to step up. There are so many newcomers," said Marianne Hartl at the time, shortly before her 70th birthday. One reason for this was probably the health setbacks of the previous year: Marianne had broken her shoulder and Michael had suffered a stroke.

"We know that we're on the home straight and that age will strike. We have to take care of ourselves and stop exhausting ourselves," the singer told Bild. It was then that she realized how quickly things could happen and how precious our time together was. "We are now looking forward to it immensely. And we've earned it too."

Hartl also pointed out the downsides of being a musician. "It's a very strenuous profession." The duo had been on the road a lot and often had to sleep in hotels. "Plus the many rehearsals and gigs. That leaves its mark." But there will still be music in the Hartl home: "After the tour, we will only sing privately, with the children and grandchildren."
