Rail transport - Many train cancellations due to GDL warning strike: emergency timetable
Warning strikes called by the train drivers' union GDL have led to numerous train cancellations in North Rhine-Westphalia. Only a greatly reduced service is possible on DB Regio's regional services. Most trains have been completely canceled and some lines are calling at fewer stations, a spokesperson for Deutsche Bahn NRW told dpa on Friday morning. In some cases, replacement bus services have been arranged. Long-distance services were also severely affected.
Deutsche Bahn had drawn up emergency timetables for the GDL's 24-hour warning strike. Trains running regularly despite the strike include the RE 34 between Dortmund and Siegen, the RE 42 between Münster and Mönchengladbach and the RE 17 between Hagen and Kassel.
The information systems bahn.de/reiseauskunft, zuginfo.nrw and the DB Navigator app are being constantly updated. Other rail companies in NRW also called on customers to use the information systems to find out about the current situation in advance.
The nationwide GDL warning strike at Deutsche Bahn began on Thursday at 10.00 pm. According to the railroad spokeswoman for NRW, there were already isolated restrictions before this time, as trains stopped running at suitable locations. The warning strike at Deutsche Bahn is expected to last until Friday at 22:00. Deutsche Bahn assumes that it will continue to have an impact into the weekend - until all trains are back on schedule.
The GDL has also called on employees of NordWestBahn GmbH and Transdev Rhein-Ruhr GmbH to go on warning strike in North Rhine-Westphalia for the same period from late Thursday evening until late Friday evening. NordWestBahn, which operates four lines in East Westphalia-Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia, is expecting severe restrictions. RheinRuhrBahn, which operates five lines with a focus on the Ruhr region, has set up an emergency bus service on four lines.
The rail company National Express, which is not directly affected by the GDL warning strike, is expecting very full RRX trains and is also asking travelers to inform themselves in advance. The National Express lines RE 1 (RRX), RE 5 (RRX), RE 6 (RRX), RE 11 (RRX), RE 4 as well as RB 48 and RE 7 are running as scheduled. However, high capacity utilization must be expected due to the warning strikes at other railroad companies.
In addition, the warning strikes at other companies could possibly also lead to delays and restrictions at National Express.
