Düsseldorf-based literary event cancelled due to coronavirus fears. - Many thousands of people anticipated to attend Japan Day.
Thousands of people are expected to attend the Japan Day celebration in Düsseldorf on Saturday. Along the Rhine waterfront, visitors can participate in cosplay, visit a samurai camp, try their hand at archery, sing karaoke, and enjoy a spectacular fireworks display. At approximately 90 stands, they'll experience distant culture and cuisine. The organizers claim the highlight of the event will be an evening performance by the Japanese singer-songwriter Higuchi Ai on the Burgplatz.
The grand finale and closing event of the Japan Day will be a 25-minute fireworks display. This year's theme is "Gold Medals and Golden Rain over Düsseldorf: Olympic Glow from Tokyo to Paris." Just like every year, the festival kicks off with the traditional tapping of a sake barrel. In 2021, over 650,000 people visited Düsseldorf for the 20th Japan Day. Many young attendees dress up in stunning costumes, like characters from Asian comic books.
The authorities remind that the weapons ban for the Old Town and the Rhine waterfront also applies on Japan Day, starting at 6 pm. Certain decorative, costume, or imitation weapons are outlawed by the Weapons Act, so the police advise people in costume to take this into consideration.
