Many schools need additional support
The head of the "First Class" project at Gräfenau elementary school sees a lot of potential for further support projects to help children with support needs. There are many schools in Rhineland-Palatinate that have similar needs to the Ludwigshafen elementary school, Professor Anja Wildemann from RPTU Landau told the German Press Agency in Mainz. This is not just about the primary school sector. "I therefore think it is very important that we continue to think about formats. I very much hope for prospects after the project."
At the elementary school in the second-largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate, 39 of the 126 first-graders had to repeat the school year. Many of the children at the school still speak little German or come from educationally disadvantaged families. Many of the children concerned had only attended a German kindergarten for a short time or not at all. The Gräfenauschule also has a focus on inclusion children.
As a result, the Ministry of Education launched the "First Class" project together with the university, in which students at the Ludwigshafen school provided targeted support and assistance to children starting school for six weeks from the beginning of the school year. The focus was on three main areas: promoting language skills, basic mathematical skills and fine motor skills such as holding a pencil.
The "First Class" project at Gräfenau elementary school highlights the need for further education support to enhance children's language skills and mathematical abilities. To address similar challenges, additional resources should be allocated to schools across Rhineland-Palatinate, as suggested by Professor Anja Wildemann from RPTU Landau.
