Traffic - Many problems with train services: criticism from Pro Bahn
Train services are often not running smoothly at the moment. Canceled or delayed trains due to illness, unmanned signal boxes and replacement services with buses seem to be almost an everyday occurrence. "We are regularly confronted with the same problems time and time again," said Noah Wand, regional chairman of the passenger association Pro Bahn Rheinland-Pfalz/Saarland.
The reason for this is "the years-long investment backlog at Deutsche Bahn". This is "exacerbated by inefficient personnel planning and a shortage of skilled workers and materials", said Wand.
According to him, the problem routes currently include the Darmstadt-Frankfurt and Mainz-Frankfurt connections, which are in high demand from commuters. In some places, buses have to be used on regional routes, for example in the Worms/Grünstadt area and in the Southern Palatinate, according to Deutsche Bahn. The staffing situation is regionally tense and there are also numerous construction sites.
As a countermeasure, a "massive increase in personnel" is being implemented to strengthen the rail network and offer better quality. In 2023, a five-digit figure will be recruited and qualified, and this is also planned for 2024. At the same time, standardization, automation and digitalization will be driven forward. A railroad spokeswoman cited modern signal boxes in Wörth am Rhein and on the Moselle line as examples.
