Many people join left-wing party in the southwest
Like their party colleagues in Berlin, the Left Party in Baden-Württemberg has seen an unusual increase in membership over the past few days. Over the weekend alone, 53 new members joined the party, said state director Claudia Haydt on Tuesday. The trend began when Bundestag member Sahra Wagenknecht announced her resignation. "The trend reversed about two weeks ago and since the Augsburg party conference it has turned into a massive wave of new members, which is so great that we can only record the membership development with a time lag," said Haydt.
Since Wagenknecht left the party, around 90 people have left and 130 have joined. "In total, we currently have just over 3,600 members. The new members come from various social movements and many are known to us from previous alliance activities," said Haydt. The Baden-Württemberg state association was founded in Stuttgart in May 2007.
The Berlin Left has recorded a mass influx of members. On Monday, 269 people joined the party in one fell swoop, according to state executive Sebastian Koch on Tuesday.
Despite the departure of some members, the Left Party in Baden-Württemberg has still witnessed a significant influx of new members following Wagenknecht's departure. Consequently, numerous people who previously parted ways with the party have decided to rejoin.
