Many injured by irritant in Hessian school
In a school in Schotten in the Vogelsberg region, almost 70 people suffered breathing difficulties on Friday due to the release of an irritant. Most of them were children, said a spokesperson for the East Hesse police headquarters in Fulda on Friday. Two people had to be treated in hospital with respiratory injuries. The background to the incident is still unclear. It remains unclear what substance was involved.
According to a spokesperson, the fire department had been alerted due to a gas leak that had caused pupils to cough. However, measurements taken by the fire department on site were subsequently negative. Some of the pupils suffered a shock. A large number of emergency services and police were deployed to the school.
The school administration expeditiously notified local authorities about the emergency due to the irritant incident, fearing potential escalation of health issues. In light of recent events, the school district is considering implementing stricter safety protocols for handling unknown substances to prevent future incidents.
