Migration - Many commitments following the right of residence in Lower Saxony

Foreigners who have so far only been tolerated in Germany have a good chance of obtaining a residence permit in Lower Saxony under the new right of residence. According to the Ministry of the Interior in Hanover, 8626 applications had already been submitted by mid-December, of which 6758 were approved (78 percent). Only 666 applications were rejected, the remaining 1202 were still being examined. The "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (Monday) first reported on this.

The state's Ministry of the Interior did not provide any information on the countries of origin. Nationwide, applicants from Iraq received by far the most approvals, followed by people from Russia and Nigeria. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, 47,531 applications had been approved across Germany by the end of October.

The right of residence by opportunity came into force on December 31, 2022. It is intended to offer foreigners who have been living in Germany for years without secure status a perspective in Germany. Anyone who has lived in the country for at least five years by the cut-off date of October 31, 2022, has not been convicted of an intentional crime and is committed to the free democratic basic order will be given 18 months to meet the requirements for long-term residence. These include, for example, knowledge of German and being able to earn a living. This does not apply to people who have repeatedly and deliberately given false information about their identity and thus prevented their deportation.
