Health - Many cases of scarlet fever in Thuringia
Scarlet fever cases are on the rise in Thuringia. From the beginning of October to mid-December, 453 of these highly contagious throat diseases were reported to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Thuringia, the Techniker Krankenkasse health insurance company announced on Monday. This is more than twice as many as in the same period last year (185 reports).
Scarlet fever is a classic childhood disease, but can also occur in adults. People mainly fall ill in the fall and winter months from October to March. In the previous reporting period from October 2022 to the end of June 2023, the RKI reported 2336 scarlet fever cases in Thuringia, which is more than ever before.
The infectious disease is caused by streptococci - a type of bacteria. It leads to inflammation in the throat and fever. Typical symptoms are a red-colored, so-called raspberry tongue and a skin rash. Infection usually occurs via droplet infection, such as the cough of an infected person. Scarlet fever is treated with antibiotics. Once you fall ill, you are not immune to the pathogens and can become infected again. An unusually high number of scarlet fever cases was observed in Germany at the end of 2022.
