Many animals perished in a blaze that engulfed a Bangkok market.
Early in the morning, around 4:10, a fire broke out at the Sri Somrat market in Chatuchak, Thailand, near stalls selling live livestock and seafood. According to the Chatuchak administrative office, the flames destroyed 118 shops within half an hour before they were put out. Amazingly, no humans were harmed in the incident, but many animals suffered. The area damaged covers approximately 1,400 square meters (15,000 square feet). The pets affected ran the gamut from dogs, cats, and rabbits to snakes, birds, fish, and chickens. However, the true extent of the damage remains unknown. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Natthanicha K, a pet shop owner, lost her business and her collection of 400 snakes due to the toxic fumes that filled the air. "The snakes didn't perish from the fire but from the smoke, as they were unable to breathe," she lamented. The creature's estimated worth is around THB 5 million ($136,000). Numerous photos and videos showcasing the blaze and the response from Bangkok's emergency personnel have been released. The footage features several firefighters and other emergency workers attempting to extinguish the unruly blaze. There's footage of flaming and smoked-filled cages.
