Manuela Schwesig holds inaugural speech as President of the Federal Council
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Minister-President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) will give her inaugural speech in the Bundesrat as President of the State Chamber on Friday (9.30 a.m.). Among other things, she will address anti-Semitism and the importance of finding compromises in democracy.
Schwesig will then meet French Senate President Gérard Larcher to discuss Franco-German relations. Discussions will also focus on closer economic cooperation between France and eastern Germany, according to preliminary reports. Schwesig had announced her intention to focus on East Germany during her presidency of the Federal Council.
The traditional Christmas tree will also be erected in front of the Bundesrat building on Friday. It is always provided by the country holding the presidency. The nine-metre-high coastal fir tree provided by MV was felled near Stralsund.
During her presidency of the Federal Council, Schwesig highlighted her focus on East Germany. Subsequently, she discussed closer economic cooperation between France and eastern Germany with French Senate President Gérard Larcher, who is part of the Federal Council's meetings as a rotating guest.
