Flood - Mansfeld-Südharz distributes flood donations to municipalities
Since Monday, in Mansfeld-Südharz district, collected donations for the floods at the end of last year are being distributed to the affected communities. The municipality of Südharz received 10,000 Euro for the construction and equipment of a waterworks, the Landkreis Mansfeld-Südharz announced. In addition, the municipality received 15,000 Euro for the rebuilding of a flooded playground in the district of Bennungen.
Preparations against future floods
The Verbandsgemeinde Goldene Aue also received 10,000 Euro to be better prepared for possible floods in the future. The two further flood-affected communities - Sangerhausen and Allstedt - are to receive the donation money on the coming Wednesday.
Floods by the river Helme
In Mansfeld-Südharz, the water of the river Helme partially overflowed its banks during the Christmas holidays. The Helme flows from Thuringia into the Kelbra dam, then through Mansfeld-Südharz and at Mönchpfiffel-Nikolausrieth, it flows back into Thuringia again. Some regions in the neighboring federal state were also affected by flooding.
Large-scale donations from the region
Approximately 60,000 Euro in donations were collected to repair the flood damages in the months of December and January. The Sparkasse Mansfeld-Südharz was the largest individual donor and contributed 14,000 Euro. They added an additional 12,000 Euro to the total amount of approximately 58,000 Euro in collected donations. Many individual donors - including several regional companies - donated four-digit amounts.
- Despite the flooding caused by the river Helme in Mansfeld-Südharz district during the Christmas holidays, which even affected some regions in the neighboring federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, efforts are being made to prepare for future floods.
- In addition to the municipality of Südharz and the Verbandsgemeinde Goldene Aue, Sangerhausen and Allstedt are also set to receive donation money to help with their flood recovery efforts.
