- Manipulation of Leipzig's traffic app navigation: unwarranted queries.
A significant scam related to an app used for Leipzig's public transportation system is causing quite a stir with law enforcement currently. Authorities have conducted searches on eleven individuals in the Leipzig area, as they revealed.
These individuals, primarily young adults and minors, are under suspicion for establishing numerous accounts in the "LeipzigMOVE" app by using unauthorized personal data and payment information of others, which they subsequently traded on social media networks. The authorities are looking into charges of computer fraud for financial gain against these individuals.
These accounts enabled the users to purchase tickets, pay for taxis, and rent bicycles and e-scooters, with the costs being charged to the original account owners. Between January and October 2023, such activities had a total financial impact of approximately 135,000 euros on Leipzig's public transportation company, which has agreed to reimburse the affected account owners for the costs they incurred.
During the raids, various mobile phones, computers, and multiple data storage devices were confiscated. According to police and prosecutors, these devices will be analyzed by specialized teams over the coming months.
The authorities utilized search warrants to gather evidence from the confiscated devices during the raids. The suspects are reportedly planning a new search for potentially hidden data related to their activities.
