Mandela's political group faces a significant defeat in elections. What impacts on South Africa?
As of 5:10pm ET, results from 90% of voting districts show that support for the African National Congress (ANC) stands at 41.04%. The Democratic Alliance (DA), the official opposition party, garnered 21.72% of the votes.
Two ANC splinter groups also made a significant impact: the recently formed uMkhonto weSizwe Party, led by Zuma, received 13.69% of the votes, while the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters gained 9.46%.
Disillusioned voters delivered a major setback to the party that once bore Nelson Mandela. Due to years of corruption scandals and economic mismanagement, the ANC will now need to form a coalition to remain in power.
The final results will be announced this weekend.
