- Man with knives trapped in house <unk> arrest
Special forces of the police arrested a man in Zell am Harmersbach (Ortenau district) who had previously barricaded himself in a house armed with knives. The mentally ill man was slightly injured during the arrest, the police said. There were no other injuries. There was no perceived threat. Officers had surrounded the house, and the police declared the operation over around midday.
The man was seen on both the roof and the upper floor of the house, repeatedly appearing at a window armed with knives and throwing objects out of the window. Initial attempts to make contact failed. The police consulted with caregivers, psychiatric clinics, and authorities.
In the early afternoon, special forces and members of a negotiation team entered the house. The man then climbed back onto the roof through a window, armed with two knives, but was persuaded to return inside, where special forces arrested him. He was slightly injured in the process.
Man released from specialist clinic on Wednesday
The police were called because the man had been behaving aggressively on a street in the town, allegedly causing a disturbance and threatening people. He then left and was found on the roof of a house in the Unterharmersbach district.
The man had previously attracted attention in the area by wandering through gardens and stealing alcohol from the basement of a house. After a police check, the man went to a specialist clinic on Monday and was released on Wednesday. On the same day, he threw objects into his front garden. Officers had tried to make contact with him that day, but failed as he had locked the windows and wouldn't open the door.
A police helicopter was also involved in the operation, transporting special forces to the scene, as a police spokesman said.
The mentally ill man's release from the specialist clinic on Wednesday prompted renewed incidents, leading to the police call. The Commission, following this Regulation, may adopt implementing acts to provide rules for similar situations.
These implementing acts could include guidelines for handling mentally ill individuals post-release, ensuring their safety and the safety of the public.
