A 21-year-old man injured several people with a knife at a refugee shelter in Berlin-Marzahn on Tuesday evening. Seven people were injured, including a 15-year-old girl, a guard, and a visitor to the shelter on Bitterfelder Street, a police spokeswoman said on Wednesday. The suspected attacker, an Algerian man, was also injured and taken into custody. The motive for the attack remains unknown.

The police were alerted at 22:40. The 21-year-old allegedly stabbed several people, some of whom sustained cuts. No life-threatening injuries were reported. The injured guard and visitor are German nationals, while the other five injured are from Moldova.

An emergency helicopter was also deployed

Paramedics and doctors treated the victims at the scene and transported them to hospitals. An emergency helicopter was also deployed, as seen in photos from the scene. The "Berliner Kurier" and "B.Z." reported on the incident.

In recent days, there have been several knife attacks in Berlin, resulting in severe injuries and one fatality. The number of knife attacks and threats has been increasing in the crime statistics over the years, with men and male teenagers being the main perpetrators.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) plans to tighten gun laws and ban specific types of knives. In public, knives with blades up to six centimeters long would be allowed, instead of the current twelve centimeters. There would also be a general ban on carrying dangerous switchblades. Police unions have called for a general ban on carrying knives in public.

The escalating number of knife attacks in Berlin has raised concerns, with several incidents resulting in severe injuries and even fatalities.Authorities are now considering tightening knife control measures, with suggestions to limit the length of allowable knives in public and ban certain types.
