Justice - Man shot dead in shisha bar: Trial restarted

A Hamburg murder trial against a 25-year-old man who allegedly shot a man in a shisha bar together with an unknown accomplice restarted on Thursday. The trial at the regional court, which had actually already started at the beginning of September, has to be reopened because one of the lay assessors fell ill long-term. The chamber has scheduled 20 hearings until February.

The public prosecutor read out the indictment again on the first day of the trial. It accuses the 25-year-old of accompanying the perpetrator, who shot a man sitting in a shisha bar several times in July 2022. The 27-year-old died in hospital due to his serious injuries. At the start of the earlier trial, the accused had protested his innocence. He had not been in the bar that evening.

The restarted murder trial in Hamburg highlights the complexities of the German justice system, as processes can be affected by unforeseen circumstances such as a long-term illness of a lay assessor. Despite the 25-year-old's earlier protestations of innocence, he is once again standing trial for his alleged involvement in a criminal act of murder, which took place in a shisha bar in July 2022.
