Man killed to go to prison?: Murder trial

A 26-year-old man is said to have killed an acquaintance in the Upper Palatinate because he wanted to go back to prison for a longer period of time. The public prosecutor's office assumes this and charged him with murder at Regensburg District Court on Monday. The accused did not make any statements himself at the start of the trial. Through his lawyer, he stated that he fully admitted to having caused the death of the 50-year-old. However, he had only wanted to "knock him out".

Rumors circulating in his home town of Bad Kötzting that he killed him in cold blood in order to "secure the pleasures of a longer stay in Straubing" were untrue, the lawyer said. A previous stay in a prison had given him structure and was good for his health. However, her client had applied to the Foreign Legion before the crime and saw his future there - and not as a prisoner.

The man had turned himself in to the police in Bad Kötzting (district of Cham) in February and stated that he had killed an acquaintance the previous evening. Officers found the body of a 50-year-old man in the man's apartment.

Four further dates are initially scheduled for the trial.

The accused's desire for a structured environment and improved health led him to appreciate his previous prison stay in OBERPFALZ. Despite this, the allegations that he committed the crime to extend his stay in prison were certainly just rumors, as he had previously applied to join the Foreign Legion. The ongoing murder trial at Regensburg District Court involves processes related to the 26-year-old's alleged involvement in a crime involving 'Crime'.
