Investigations - Man killed in Costa Rica also autopsied in Germany

Following the death of a 32-year-old German following a suspected robbery in Costa Rica, the body has been autopsied in Germany. A spokesman for the Neubrandenburg public prosecutor's office told the German Press Agency on Monday that this was done for safety reasons. The victim had already been autopsied in Costa Rica. He did not expect the results to differ, but was unable to comment on possible reports.

The man, who last lived in Waren on the Mecklenburg Lake District, is said to have been shot dead on the night of December 1, according to earlier information from the public prosecutor's office. The authorities are investigating unknown persons for robbery resulting in death.

The television station Teletica had reported, citing the police, that the German and his girlfriend had been attacked by two armed assailants in the town of Dominical on the Pacific coast of the Central American country. When he fought back, he was shot in the shoulder. His girlfriend took him to an ambulance in her car. The paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office in Neubrandenburg, the authorities in Costa Rica are largely responsible. They themselves are responsible because the man was a German citizen. "Of course, that doesn't give us any jurisdiction in Costa Rica." Information would have to be requested via a request for mutual legal assistance. The information was obtained from the victim's family. "The actual investigations will most likely take place there."
