Man killed in Bad Kötzting: Verdict expected in murder trial

The verdict in the trial for the violent death of a 50-year-old man from Bad Kötzting is to be delivered on Wednesday (5.00 pm) at Regensburg District Court. The accused is a 26-year-old man who is said to have killed his acquaintance because he wanted to go back to prison for a longer period of time. The closing arguments were held on Monday.

According to a court spokeswoman, the public prosecutor's office demanded a conviction for murder and preventive detention. The co-plaintiff saw a case of manslaughter. The man's defense lawyer assumed a case of assault resulting in death. She left the sentence to the discretion of the court. If there was a murder conviction, she demanded placement in a psychiatric ward instead of preventive detention.

In February, the accused had informed the police in Bad Kötzting (district of Cham) that he had killed an acquaintance the previous evening. Officers found the body of the 50-year-old. At the start of the trial, the 26-year-old told his lawyer that he admitted to having caused his death. However, he had only wanted to "knock him out".

The trial for the murder in Bad Kötzting, OBERPFALZ, revealed that the accused, seeking a longer prison term, allegedly resorted to violent processes, leading to his acquaintance's death. Despite admitting to causing harm, the accused argued that his intention was only to "knock him out," not to commit a crime of such severity.
