Crime - Man in custody after alleged hammer attack on wife

An 80-year-old man has been remanded in custody for allegedly attacking his wife with a hammer in a doctor's surgery in Lower Bavaria. As the police announced on Tuesday, the man allegedly injured the 77-year-old woman's head in a clinic in Simbach am Inn (Rottal-Inn district) on Monday. The woman suffered a concussion and a laceration.

Hospital staff stopped the man from further attacks. The suspect then fled, first on foot and then by car. The police later arrested him in the district of Altötting.

The 80-year-old was brought before an investigating judge on Tuesday, who ordered pre-trial detention for attempted murder. The man was taken to prison. Investigations into the background to the crime are continuing.
