Man finds stick firebomb in the garden
A man has found a bomb in his garden in Mainz. After an inspection by the explosive ordnance disposal service, it turned out that the discovery on Wednesday was a so-called stick-bomb, as the police announced on Thursday.
Stick incendiary bombs were used by the British armed forces and the German Luftwaffe during the Second World War. The metal bodies, which were around half a meter long, weighed less than two kilograms and burned for several minutes.
According to the police, the bomb poses no immediate danger as long as sources of fire in the vicinity are avoided. It was therefore not necessary to remove it immediately. However, the bomb was to be recovered on Thursday.
The discovery of the stick-bomb in Mainz serves as a reminder of the emergencies that can arise from the consequences of war, specifically during conflicts like World War II. The consequences of such emergencies can be severe, and in this case, it's crucial to handle the situation carefully to avoid any escalation.
