Weld seam inspection - Man exposed to increased radiation in X-ray facility
An employee of a company in the administrative district of Freiburg has been exposed to an increased radiation dose during a weld seam test with an X-ray device. As the Ministry of the Environment announced on Friday, the incident occurred at the end of September. The cause was probably an operating error. The employee concerned did not suffer any damage.
According to the ministry, the evaluation of the official dosimeter revealed a radiation exposure of 71.5 millisieverts (mSv). This corresponds to approximately 3.5 times the annual limit of 20 mSv for occupationally exposed persons. As the specified annual limit was far exceeded, the incident was classified by the Ministry of the Environment as level 2 (incident) on the INES scale and reported to the Federal Ministry for the Environment. From level 2 of the seven-level scale, incidents are forwarded to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
