Police - Man dies after being shot: autopsy results available
Around half a week after the death of an armed man during a police operation involving gunfire in Cologne, the preliminary autopsy results are now available. According to the results, both the gunshot wound and a neck injury were so serious that they each led to death, a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office in Cologne announced on Monday evening. And: "Ultimately, the combination of both injuries was the cause of death." According to the current state of knowledge, the 36-year-old inflicted the neck injury on himself.
The investigation into the exact sequence of events is still ongoing. "Among other things, the recordings from the body cams worn during the operation are being evaluated," the spokeswoman continued in response to a dpa inquiry.
According to earlier reports, the 36-year-old man from Euskirchen had a knife with him during the operation on Thursday evening, which he is said not to have put away as requested by the police officers. A police officer shot him once in the upper body. The man is said to have seriously injured himself with the knife while lying on the ground. He later died in hospital.
The 36-year-old is said to have previously harassed two women and tried to get to their car by force. After he failed to do so, he fled and got into a cab, according to the public prosecutor's office. The cab driver refused and got out. When the 36-year-old got into the driver's seat and tried to drive off, he was stopped by two police officers.
The Cologne public prosecutor's office announced on Friday that it was investigating whether the police officers involved were guilty of misconduct. A so-called death investigation had been opened. The police officers would be questioned as witnesses.
