Public prosecutor's office - Man dead after being shot: behavior of police officers under investigation
Following the death of an armed man during a police operation in which shots were fired, the public prosecutor's office is investigating whether the police officers involved can be accused of misconduct. The Cologne public prosecutor's office announced on Friday that it had opened a so-called death investigation and was examining whether there were concrete indications of criminal culpability on the part of police officers. The police officers will be questioned as witnesses.
According to the information, the 36-year-old man from Euskirchen had a knife with him during the operation on Thursday evening, which he allegedly did not put away as requested by the police officers. A police officer shot the man once in the upper body. The man is said to have seriously injured himself with the knife while lying on the ground. He later died in hospital - whether from the knife injuries or from the shot was initially unclear. An autopsy was ordered to clarify the cause of death, according to the public prosecutor's office.
The 36-year-old is said to have previously harassed two women and used physical force to try to get to their car. After he failed to do so, he fled and got into a cab, according to the public prosecutor's office. The cab driver refused and got out. When the 36-year-old got into the driver's seat and tried to drive off, he was stopped by two police officers. According to the public prosecutor's office, the man had no previous record of violence.
