An 83-year-old man was almost hit by a train in Bernau am Chiemsee in Upper Bavaria (Rosenheim district) when he tried to retrieve his umbrella from the track area. According to the Federal Police on Thursday, the man was able to climb back onto the platform about 15 meters before the front of the moving long-distance train.

His 77-year-old wife had wanted to throw him the forgotten umbrella across the tracks from the opposite platform. However, the umbrella landed between the rails and the man climbed down to get it. Meanwhile, the train was approaching at around 130 kilometers per hour, according to the federal police. The train driver noticed the man and applied the emergency brakes. Shortly after the end of the platform, the train came to a halt with the last carriage.

The approximately 140 passengers were reportedly unharmed by the emergency braking. The man suffered minor abrasions to his hands while climbing onto the platform. The Federal Police are now investigating the 83-year-old for negligently causing dangerous interference with rail traffic.
