Murder trial - Man allegedly stabbed almost a hundred times: Trial begins
A man is said to have stabbed his former girlfriend almost a hundred times with a knife - at the start of the murder trial against him, the 30-year-old confessed to killing the woman. He stabbed her and was later surprised at the number of stabs and cuts, the accused said on Tuesday at Oldenburg District Court. The victim was a 23-year-old woman from Rheda-Wiedenbrück in North Rhine-Westphalia (Gütersloh district).
The public prosecutor charged the German with murder with malice aforethought and base motives. According to the prosecutor, the accused wanted to punish the woman because she no longer wanted to be with him. The crime took place on June 25 in Vechta, Lower Saxony.
The accused gave a full statement in the packed courtroom. He said that he had drunk alcohol the morning before a meeting with his former partner. He had wanted to convince the woman, whom he had met in a nightclub in 2019, to get back into a relationship. According to him, there was an argument and he threatened her: "Sit down, we're not done here yet." The argument became physical: He covered her mouth with his hand, she bit his finger, then turned around. "Then I suddenly stabbed him." He then tried to kill himself.
The presiding judge asked the confessing defendant questions. The man reported that his mother had died of cancer and that he had then abandoned his training as an animal farmer. Later, his brother had also died. The accused also reported health problems. He also said that he had known that his former partner had met another man.
A police officer who was at the scene of the crime in June gave evidence in the courtroom. She had seen many cuts on the woman's body: on her chest, shoulder and neck. She counted around 60. A forensic pathologist explained exactly how many injuries there were and where they were located. For the first time, he had to develop a new scheme to classify the injuries, he said. There were so many stitches and cuts.
The district court had initially scheduled a total of four trial dates. If the schedule remains the same, the trial should be concluded at the end of January 2024. The defendant's confession is likely to speed up the trial.
