A trial against a 38-year-old man for manslaughter began on Wednesday at Hamburg District Court. The accused is said to have stabbed a man to death with a kitchen knife in a backyard in the Heimfeld district in July. According to the indictment, the victim and perpetrator had argued over money claims. In the course of this, the Tunisian is said to have shown the 54-year-old the kitchen knife in his trouser leg to intimidate him. The later victim therefore grabbed a chair and hit the 38-year-old with it. He then allegedly pulled out the knife and stabbed the 54-year-old in the hand, forearm and chest. The victim reportedly died of heart and lung failure as a result of the stab wounds.

At the beginning of the trial, the defendant made a statement through his defense lawyer in which he confirmed that there had been a dispute over money, according to a court spokesman. He had been attacked with a chair and had wanted to threaten with a knife. He had no recollection of how the knife had been used. A witness who is said to have observed the confrontation will be heard on the next day of the trial. If convicted of manslaughter, the accused faces a prison sentence of between 5 and 15 years.
