A 25-year-old is standing trial for the death of a 38-year-old in Berlin-Pankow. The man is accused of attacking his victim during a planned drug deal with a machete, leading to his death. The defendant, who confessed to the crime, expressed regret at the trial's start.

The men, both German citizens, had arranged a drug deal on December 28, 2023. The 25-year-old ordered 950 euros worth of cannabis and cannabis preparations from the 38-year-old online. When the 38-year-old didn't want to hand over the drugs without payment, the defendant pulled out a machete. This led to a fight where the 25-year-old stabbed the 38-year-old multiple times. The prosecution believes it was a murder done for greed and to commit another crime.

The victim was found dead, covered in blood, in front of a house on Vinetastraße in Pankow. The defendant was arrested the following day and has been in pre-trial detention since then.

The defendant told the court he only wanted to scare the 38-year-old with the machete and take the drugs without paying. But when it became physical, he used the machete to try and keep his opponent at a distance. "It hurts me a lot," he said. He claimed he had been inspired by a previous drug purchase where the 38-year-old gave him less cannabis than agreed. Since the seller denied this, "I came up with the idea of taking him away and not paying anything," he stated. The 38-year-old attacked him, so the defendant "grabbed the machete and stabbed or hit him." He didn't intend to kill the man. The defendant was under the influence of drugs during the incident. The trial will continue on June 11.
