Finances - Majority of property tax returns processed
The majority of property tax returns submitted in Saxony-Anhalt have now been processed. Of the approximately 853,000 declarations received, around 613,000 have been processed so far, the Ministry of Finance announced in response to an inquiry.
Around 125,000 appeals have been lodged against the assessments for the new property tax. A total of around 52,000 declarations are still missing. Around 70 declarations are currently being received by the tax offices every day, it said.
Until the end of January, owners of real estate and land were required to submit a property tax return. The new property tax is due from January 1, 2025. As part of this reform, almost 36 million properties across Germany will have to be revalued using owner information. Property tax is an important source of income for local authorities. How much individual owners will have to pay in future depends largely on the so-called assessment rates of the municipalities.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the BMF (Federal Ministry of Finance) is closely monitoring the progress of property tax returns, ensuring a smooth process for the majority of submissions. The high volume of declarations, around 853,000, necessitates careful handling, with just over 613,000 processed so far. Despite this progress, ongoing appeals and missing declarations mean 52,000 returns remain unprocessed. Municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt, reliant on property tax as a significant source of income, are closely watching the assessment rates that will determine future property tax liabilities for property and real estate owners in the region.
