Online Communication - Majority of Hesse inhabitants are connected to the internet.
In 2023, a whopping 95% of people aged 16 to 74 in Hessen used the internet, totaling around 4.5 million individuals. This information was shared by the Statistical Office in Wiesbaden last June 7th, which also marked the federal digital day. Among these users, around 85% had sent or received private emails within the three months before the survey. An astounding 68% of them also engaged in online shopping during those months.
Out of these respondents, two-thirds (66%) connected with others via online phone or video calls. Additionally, 57% managed their banking affairs on the internet. The Statistical Office reports that 54% of Hessian women and men maintained active profiles on social networks. Surprisingly, approximately one in five people (19%) sold personal belongings or services online, through platforms like auctions.
These statistics were derived from a survey on the usage of information and communication technologies in private households in 2023. This survey is part of the mandatory microcensus, a voluntary sample survey that is conducted yearly on 1% of the population.

In light of these online habits, the State Office in Wiesbaden, Hesse's capital, encourages more businesses to offer online services, such as video calls for customer support. On numerous occasions, the Hesse residents have shown their affinity for online shopping, with a significant 68% engaging in it within the past three months. In fact, the internet has become an integral part of daily life for the majority of Hesse inhabitants, with around 95% using it in 2023, as revealed by the Statistical Office in Wiesbaden.
