Mainz's Galeria Kaufhof location will stay open.

Insolvency led to the closure of 16 Galeria-Karstadt-Kaufhof stores in Germany initially. However, currently, that number has reduced to just ten. The business persists in Mainz.

In the city of Mainz, home to the Rhineland-Palatinate state, the department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof's location will remain intact. Negotiations have led to a significant reduction in rental fees, allowing the business to run until 2028. This news was shared by Torsten Außem, branch manager, and Nino Haase, the independent mayor, on Friday. Approximately 150 employees at the location will keep their jobs, and all previously scheduled terminations have been canceled.

Labor Minister Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) expressed relief at the successful preservation of the Mainz location. He praised the efforts of the city, Galeria's management, and the workers' council in creating a future plan for the location. Schweitzer emphasized the importance of investing in innovative ideas and skilled staff for a brighter future for Galeria.

He added, "I have promised the Galeria management my support for the Rhineland-Palatinate locations as part of the state's qualification initiatives."

Earlier, Galeria had announced that six stores with about 500 jobs would not shut down during their chain's restructuring process. In addition to Mainz, these locations include Berlin-Spandau, Cologne (Breite Straße), Mannheim, Oldenburg, and Würzburg. Initially, 16 locations were slated to close on August 31. However, this number has now been reduced to ten, meaning 82 stores will continue to operate.

Out of the current 92 stores, 16 were marked for closure, but now only 10 will be affected. This means that 82 stores will remain intact. Overall, around 900 jobs will be lost due to the store's insolvency, while approximately 11,900 will be retained.
