Mainz sporting director Heidel: Siewert's promotion open

Chief Sports Officer Christian Heidel is leaving open the possibility of interim coach Jan Siewert taking on a permanent role at Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05. "We haven't said a single word about the future," Heidel said on Sunday on Sport1's "Doppelpass". It has only been known since Wednesday night that the previous head coach Bo Svensson had decided to resign. "There was no opportunity to talk about the future," said Heidel. "Jan is certainly someone who will appear in the Bundesliga sooner or later - perhaps with us."

He added that they would calmly discuss which path is best for Mainz. "But he has done well," said Heidel. Under the direction of the 41-year-old coach of the club's U23 team, Mainz 05 won 2-0 against RB Leipzig on Saturday. It was the Rheinhessen's first win of the season in the Bundesliga. The Dane Svensson had decided to retire following last Wednesday's DFB Cup exit at Hertha BSC (0:3). Siewert had already taken over on an interim basis for one match in the 2020/21 season.

Siewert's impressive performance with FSV Mainz 05 against RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga could potentially lead him to a permanent role in the club. Despite their current focus on calmly discussing the best path forward, the sporting director Heidel acknowledges that Siewert is destined for a future in the Bundesliga.
