Bundesliga - Mainz against Heidenheim: "One thing is clear, we need points"

Jan Siewert still doesn't want to talk about his personal situation, and the interim coach doesn't even need to say much about the situation at FSV Mainz 05. "One thing is clear, we need points," said the largely taciturn 41-year-old ahead of the Bundesliga match between the team second last in the table and promoted 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday (3.30 pm/Sky).

At present, little speaks in favor of the relegation-threatened Mainz side, who have recently failed to score twice (0:1 at home to SC Freiburg, 0:0 at 1. FC Köln) and have picked up just four points in their six appearances at the Mewa Arena."Heidenheim have picked up a few more points than us, so we know what we have to do," said Siewert. Nevertheless, he does not believe that the game is "overly important". In any case, the next step is to "get the ball over the line".

Jonathan Burkardt, who made his first appearance in the starting eleven in Cologne following his serious knee injury and has coped well with the strain, could help with this. According to the FSV coach, Karim Onisiwo is on the road to recovery after his flu-like infection, but his participation is not guaranteed. Captain Silvan Widmer, on the other hand, is ill. Regular keeper Robin Zentner is still out due to a finger injury.

Since Siewert took over, the former U23 coach has only lost one of his five matches - but only won one: the first with a 2-0 win against RB Leipzig. Mainz want to decide in the winter break whether they will continue with him. However, Siewert has yet to see any results and the Nullfünfer have to face Borussia Dortmund at the end of the year on Tuesday.

"I'm not worried about that. My focus was and will continue to be on the games. We have communicated that we will sit down afterwards and talk together," said Siewert on Thursday. When asked, Siewert denied that there had been any further talks about his future with those responsible around sporting director Christian Heidel: "Why should we talk about the topic if we've already dealt with it once?"
