Soccer - Mainz 05: Batz or Rieß for the injured keeper Zentner?
Following the absence of Robin Zentner, interim coach Jan Siewert has left it open at FSV Mainz 05 as to who will stand in for the regular keeper against SC Freiburg on Sunday (15:30/DAZN). "I'm certainly not going to say who will be in goal. We have two goalkeepers fit for the Bundesliga - a luxury problem," said the 41-year-old on Thursday about his backup goalkeepers Daniel Batz and Lasse Rieß.
Veteran Batz (32) joined Mainz in the summer from third-division club 1. FC Saarbrücken. The 22-year-old Rieß joined the Nullfünfer as an eleven-year-old. "We can't put two in goal. That means the choice will fall on one - and he will do a good job," said Siewert. Zentner is out due to a finger injury. The FSV coach was unable to say how long the professional footballer would be missing: "We'll have to see. We tried a splint yesterday, but that didn't work."
Back in the squad after serving their yellow card suspensions are Sepp van den Berg and Dominik Kohr. Both are an option for the starting eleven, said Siewert. Mainz are still waiting for their second win of the season. Bo Svensson's successor secured the first in a 2-0 win against RB Leipzig. His team then drew at SV Darmstadt 98 and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
With a success, Siewert could continue to recommend himself for long-term employment. The former U23 coach doesn't really want to hear any more questions about this, especially as there have been no reports from the club for some time now.
