Museum operation - Main building of the German Historical Museum closed

The reopening of the main building of the German Historical Museum in Berlin will be delayed. According to information provided on Wednesday, the central arsenal will not be available again at the end of 2025 as planned. A feasibility study has shown that a completely new infrastructure for information technology is essential in order to ensure that the museum can operate in line with the times. This would require a separate construction project in addition to the extensive renovation work. The museum was unable to provide any information on how long the reopening will be delayed as a result.

During the work, around 6000 objects from the previous permanent exhibition will be housed in rented storage space. A new permanent exhibition is being developed for the Zeughaus in parallel with the renovation. The Pei Building next to the Zeughaus, named after its architect, will continue to be available to the museum for temporary exhibitions.

This temporary arrangement comes as the museum undergoes extensive renovation and implements a new infrastructure for information technology to improve its operational capabilities, in line with Germany's evolving historical landscape.
