Maglev train a "sensible addition" according to Senator

Berlin's transport senator Manja Schreiner has endorsed the possible use of a magnetic levitation train in Berlin. "It is a sensible addition that can be used to expand the network in certain places," the CDU politician told RBB station Radio Eins on Monday.

According to Schreiner, the new means of transport should have no impact on existing plans for new subway or streetcar routes. "I think it's unrealistic to replace existing plans again, so to speak, because we are well advanced in the planning process." However, a comparison of means of transport could be made elsewhere. In addition, the suspension railroad could reduce car traffic, said the senator. "If we say that people should use their cars less, we also have to offer alternatives."

The chairman of the CDU parliamentary group, Dirk Stettner, announced on Monday that the use of a magnetic levitation train in the capital would be tested on a pilot route a good five kilometers long. Stettner did not specify where the pilot route could run through the city. It is also not yet clear when construction will begin.

The magnetic levitation train, proposed as a sensible addition, could potentially reduce car traffic in Berlin, contributing positively to the city's environment. Considering this, it would be beneficial to conduct a pilot test on a designated railroad route.
