Magdeburg World of Lights with new elements this year
Magdeburg's world of lights will shine with three new elements this winter. From November 27, 2023 to February 2, 2024, 1.2 million LEDs on more than 80 large elements will once again light up the state capital. New: the gate of the Ulrichskirche church on Ulrichplatz, otters climbing up lanterns on Eichplatz in Ottersleben and the "5th element" in the cosmic world of lights Reform, which is to remain secret until December 1. This was announced by the organizers on Monday.
The Magdeburg Christmas market will open on November 27. "We are hoping for a really good Christmas market," said Managing Director Paul-Gerhard Stieger. Although the financial situation remains tense for many, the mood is much better than in the past two years.
A dispute over music rights with Gema broke out in many places before the start of the Christmas market season. In Halle and Magdeburg, too, there had been reports of rising license fees for music at the markets. Stieger explained that talks with Gema via the German Association of Cities had not yet been successful. The music collecting society had not yet responded to a letter from the organizers in Magdeburg.
The Christmas market will therefore probably switch to Gema-free music this year. "For example, we won't be playing "Last Christmas" over the central sound system," explained Stieger. The huts and mulled wine stands, on the other hand, have their own Gema contracts. "Accordingly, a wider range of music will of course be played in the huts."
During their leisure time, visitors to the Magdeburg World of Lights can enjoy custom-made music plays at the market stalls, as negotiations with Gema for music rights remain unresolved. The Ulrichskirche church gate and otter-themed lanterns are among the new attractions in this year's light display.
