Culture - Magdeburg Puppet Theater plans seven premieres
The Puppet Theater Magdeburg will bring "Astrid Lindgren's The Brothers Lionheart" and Bertolt Brecht's "Threepenny Opera" to the stage in the upcoming season. A total of seven premieres for children and adults are planned, announced Intendantin Sabine Schramm on Thursday. The production of "Nikolaus and the Silly Nuck" based on the same-named picture book by Luise von der Crone (Premiere on 23rd November 2024) will also come to the stage. For people aged 16 and above, "Sein oder Nichtsein" will be staged, a comedy by Nick Whitby based on a film by Ernst Lubitsch, in which a Jewish acting troupe fights for their lives in the Nazi era.
The season opening is planned for 31st August with theater and art for all age groups. Workshops, live performances, and glimpses behind the scenes are announced. In the following season, there will be a series with podium discussions, scenic readings, music evenings, and performances with Q&A sessions. Various small special formats are possible, said Schramm. The opening event will be a talkshow with titles "Land under? The East, the Elections, the Puppets and us" on 13th September.
From 4th to 8th June 2025, there will be a festival under the motto "Clap! Boom! Bang! Kasper goes Unesco". The occasion is the inclusion of the Kasper Theater as an intangible cultural heritage in the federal-wide register of the German UNESCO Commission. The charming figure of Kasper will be offered space on all stages of the house in Magdeburg and on the outdoor area.
The Puppet Theater Magdeburg is an independent enterprise of the state capital. It exists independently next to the Theater Magdeburg, a four-genre house. To the Puppet Theater belong a youth art school and a collection of figures. According to the statements, the Puppet Theater had an occupancy rate of over 93% from September 2023 to May 2024. The visitor number in the 2023/24 season was around 49,000, according to Administrative Director Melanie Diedrich-Schüller.
