Bundesliga 2 - Magdeburg enter the cup with confidence after victory

Consistency and patience were the key words at 1. FC Magdeburg after the 4:1 win over traditional club 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Luc Castaignos (17), Herbert Bockhorn (51), Connor Krempicki (75) and Cristiano Piccini (86) scored in front of 25,214 spectators in the frosty MDCC Arena. Terrence Boyd (25) was only able to equalize in the meantime. The reward was the second three in a row, taking the Elbe club's points tally to 19.

"Especially when an opponent always goes with the men, was very focused and you know that you can't always let yourself be lured, but have to prepare the opportunities," explained FCM coach Christian Titz.

It did not look like such a clear victory at the break, as both sides had largely neutralized each other in the first half and Kaiserslautern even looked more determined. But after Bockhorn's goal following an assist from Baris Atik - in his 100th FCM match - the visitors looked increasingly unsettled and helpless after going 3-1 down.

"I've probably scored a goal with my head before, but it's been a while," said Bockhorn. "We want to occupy these spaces. I see Baris asserting himself and of course I trust his left foot," added the full-back.

In general, FCM proved to be variable when it came to scoring goals. While the lead came from a surprising long ball from midfield, Krempicki's 3:1 was the result of a typical dribble by Tatsuya Ito, whose pass to the convincing Xavier Amaechi failed to beat the hand of Lautern central defender Nikola Soldo before Krempicki converted the rebound without humor.

However, the game also had two downer moments for the Elbe club. Atik had to be substituted early on with a thigh strain and striker Luca Schuler had to leave the pitch after just 15 minutes with a suspected torn muscle fiber. While the striker is likely to miss the game against Düsseldorf, Atik should at least be able to play in the cup round of 16.

Piccini confirmed that the Elbe club's goal is clearly to progress. "It would be great for the team, the club and our fans if we reach the next round. Düsseldorf are a good team, but we're playing in our stadium with our fans, we have confidence and I think we can win," said the Italian, looking ahead to the game. "It will be really fun again on Tuesday in front of the fans. Anything is possible in the cup - we want to see how far we can go," explained Bockhorn after the game.
