Politics - Madsen criticizes cuts in federal funding for regional railroads

Schleswig-Holstein's Minister of Economics and Transport Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU) has criticized the federal government's plan to cut funding for local rail transport. This is absolutely counterproductive, Madsen told NDR on Friday.

Until now, the promise had been that more regionalization funds would come. "It is obvious that a lot of money is missing in the rail sector. I think that's a fatal signal." The federal government is talking about a cut of 350 million euros, which would mean around ten million euros less per year for Schleswig-Holstein, said Madsen.

Rail transport as a task had been transferred from the federal government to the federal states with the promise to finance it accordingly. "The federal government must also do this," the minister demanded. We are facing huge challenges. "In the end, we are faced with the choice of only being able to cancel transport services. That has nothing whatsoever to do with a mobility turnaround." The federal government's behavior is against any agreement. "I simply expect them to treat us a little differently."
