Leader of the nation - Macron's State Visit to Saxony Continues
French President Emmanuel Macron's detour to Saxony is part of his state visit to Germany. The trip will include a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument for slain European Jews in the early hours of the day. In the afternoon, Macron and his wife Brigitte will be at Schloss Moritzburg, near Dresden, along with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender.
The afternoon's highlight is expected to be Macron's European political speech at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. Thousands of young people from Saxony, Poland, the Czech Republic, and France are expected to attend, prompting speculation that Macron may target eastern European partners who fear becoming Putin's next victims.
Host Steinmeier, in his Sunday evening speech during the state dinner at Schloss Bellevue, urged more emotional investment in Europe for its continued maintenance. "It's not just about our spirit. It's about our hearts. It's about our united strength if we want to keep this Europe, shape it," he said. Steinmeier stressed the importance of youth passion in this regard.
Macron and Steinmeier have both confirmed the significance of Franco-German relations and denied they're in crisis. Steinmeier previously noted that expected uniformity among European member states creates a misconception in criticisms of France-Germany relations, due to each country's unique history and traditions. "And yes, different interests," Steinmeier added.
Franco-German collaboration has made strides in recent months, including joint arms projects. Steinmeier considers the relationship less astigmatic than media narratives. "What I expect is ambition," he said, "to actually come together in the areas where we still disagree."
Macron's Saxony itinerary also involves a visit to the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems for an AI and European microchip industry discussion. The state visit will conclude in Münster, where he will receive the International Peace Prize of Westphalia.
On Tuesday, the German-French government consultations will be held at Schloss Meseberg, the federal government north of Berlin.
