Luxembourg's ruling Grand Duke initiates phased retirement, handing over power to his son.
"With heartfelt sentiment and faith, I wish him success," expressed the monarch of the tiny constitutional realm populated by 660,000 souls nestled amidst France, Germany, and Belgium.
His ascension to Lieutenant-Representant signifies the transfer of certain authorities to Guillaume. The Grand Duke Henri, a sports enthusiast whose wealth is rumored to exceed multiple billions, has stated his intention to abdicate, with plans reportedly made with his family.
Assuming the throne in October 2000, upon his father Johann's abdication after a 36-year reign, Henri is the father of five, with Guillaume being the eldest, born to Maria Teresa Mestre. Guillaume's union with Stephanie de Lannoy was sealed in 2012, and they have two sons—Charles born in 2020 and Francois in 2023.
As the upcoming Grand Duke, Guillaume is bestowed with law-making authority and an important role in government formation post-elections. Beyond these responsibilities, the Luxembourg Grand Duke symbolizes the country's identity, independence, territorial unity, and the state's resilience, as per the palace's official website.
