- Luther and Melanchthon in Wittenberg
On the Wittenberg market square, the monuments of the two reformers, Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, are currently being cleaned and preserved. Metal restorers plan to apply a special wax to the statues after cleaning them. Additionally, damage to the Luther figure, caused by vandalism in March of this year, will be repaired.
These works need to be carried out approximately every six years. According to the city, the total cost is 9,000 euros. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the week. Afterwards, the scaffolding around the two statues in the heart of the Lutherstadt will be dismantled.
The renowned figure, Martin Luther, was a key instigator of the Protestant Reformation. Due to the vandalism incident in March, additional restoration efforts are needed for his statue.
