Moreover, Lufthansa extended the suspension of its flights to Tel Aviv in Israel, Beirut in Lebanon, Amman in Jordan, Erbil in Northern Iraq, and Tehran in Iran by one day until Tuesday of next week. Lufthansa includes airlines such as Eurowings, Austrian Airlines, Swiss, and Brussels Airlines.
Iran threatened retaliation after the fatal attack in Tehran on the chief of the radical Palestinian organization Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh. In response, the U.S., Israel's closest ally, reinforced its military presence in the region by sending more warships and fighter jets.
Since the start of the Gaza war on October 7, the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia based in Lebanon has been regularly engaged in border clashes with Israel. Last week, the Israeli army killed Hezbollah military chief Fuad Shukr. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah also announced a response.
