Ludwigslust-Parchim has the highest purchasing power in MV

How wealthy or poor you are depends not only on your income, the regional cost of living also plays a role. Things don't look so favorable for city dwellers in particular.

Ludwigslust-Parchim has the highest purchasing power in MV

In no other district or independent city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the purchasing power per capita as high as in Ludwigslust-Parchim. And the two independent cities of Rostock and Schwerin are clearly lagging behind in the north-east. This is shown by calculations by the Institute of the German Economy (IW), which compared the average per capita nominal income in Germany regionally and related it to the respective price levels for the cost of living.

The idea behind the ranking is that differences in the cost of living could compensate for some of the differences in income - or exacerbate them. As everywhere in Germany, it is clear that people living outside the cities have the highest purchasing power. An earlier IW analysis had shown that higher housing costs often drive the price level in cities. In addition, nominal incomes there are often significantly lower than outside the cities.

With an average nominal income of around 22,838 euros, the IW analysts arrive at a price-adjusted disposable annual income of 24,552 euros for Ludwigslust-Parchim. This is the top figure in the north-east, making the district the only one in the state to be slightly above the national average. At the bottom of the scale are the people of Rostock with a per capita income of 21,231 euros. Of the 400 cities and districts surveyed nationwide, the situation is only worse in 15 other cities and districts. The situation is similar in Schwerin (22,645 euros), and only in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald (21,580 euros) is the real per capita income lower than in the state capital.

The districts of Rostock (24,089 euros), Mecklenburgische Seenplatte (23,369 euros) and Nordwestmecklenburg (23,144 euros) rank behind Ludwigslust-Parchim.

The ranking is based on data from the Federal Statistical Office on nominal income as at 2021, which the IW has combined with its index of the regional cost of living. This is based, among other things, on 24 million price data queried in 2022.

Despite having a higher per capita nominal income of approximately 22,838 euros, consumers in Ludwigslust-Parchim still need to consider price levels for essential expenses. The relatively high purchasing power in Ludwigslust-Parchim allows consumers to maintain their living standards with ease, compared to consumers in cities like Rostock and Schwerin with lower disposable incomes due to higher living expenses.
