Ludwigsburg basketball players get revenge against Sassari
The MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg have taken revenge in the Champions League for their 79:89 home defeat against Banco di Sardegna Sassari two weeks ago. The German Basketball League club won 97:80 (54:41) in Sardinia on Wednesday and so also has the direct comparison against Sassari on its side. The Swabians now have a record of 2:2 wins in the European Cup.
Ludwigsburg got off to a focused start, conceding few turnovers and finishing well near the basket. The visitors stretched a 24:18 lead after the first quarter to double digits for the first time three minutes later. The club from Swabia also scored better from outside in the second half, notching up 30 points and leading by 54:41 at half-time.
Ludwigsburg maintained its rhythm after the break, opening the third quarter with a 12:0 run. Ludwigsburg struggled against Sassari's zone defense in the final period and its lead dwindled to twelve points. However, the visitors produced the right response with two successful threes. Jayvon Graves (20 points) and Eddy Edigin (twelve points, ten rebounds) were Ludwigsburg's best players.
There are still two matchdays left in the preliminary round, with only the group winners of the Champions League qualifying directly for the second group stage. The runners-up and third-placed teams have to survive a play-in phase in order to progress. AEK Athens are currently top of Ludwigsburg's Group D with a record of 4:0 wins.
Ludwigsburg's victory against Sassari in the FIBA Basketball Champions League has improved their record to 2:2 in the tournament. In their next two matches in the preliminary round, Ludwigsburg aims to secure a direct spot in the second group stage by finishing among the group winners.
