Medical Procedure - Lübeck sees its first kidney surgery with the aid of a robotic device.
In Germany, a groundbreaking surgery was performed in Lübeck where a part of a 67-year-old patient's kidney was removed using an operating robot for the very first time. The patient had a tumor in their left kidney, and the entire tumor was successfully removed in a minimally invasive procedure, as per the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein.
Usually, a full kidney would be removed during open surgery. However, in this situation, the team decided on a kidney-preserving, minimally invasive approach, as stated by Daniar Osmonov, the deputy clinic director and head of robot-assisted urology. The surgery lasted 70 minutes and went smoothly, with the patient recovering well and no complications arising.
The first operation with the system HUGO was executed at the UKSH, Campus Lübeck, in March 2023. Since then, it has been used approximately fifty times, predominantly in urology and abdominal surgeries.
